Honor Code
Saint Mark’s Honor Code was developed by seventh and eighth grade students during Upper Division Orientation in August of 2003. On the first day of Orientation, teachers acted out skits, which demonstrated dishonorable behavior. Afterwards, students discussed topics that arose out of the teachers’ role-playing in a large group. The next day, student Mentors groups met individually to create an honor code. The groups then convened to compare what they had each written. The resultant honor code was adopted by all Upper Division students. The statement reads as follows:
In their academic performance and in their relationships with peers and adults, students are expected to develop and exhibit honorable behavior through showing respect, acting courteously, being helpful, participating fully and demonstrating honesty with themselves and others.”
Students and teachers alike sign a contract at the start of each year, committing to behave honorably.
During their work with the Honor Code, students also brainstormed about strategies for achieving honorable behavior. The strategies became known as Twenty Habits of Mindfulness:
- Practice self-reliance.
- Listen to your conscience.
- Find common ground.
- Build trust and comfort.
- Take risks.
- Own your mistakes.
- Be courageous.
- Be sensitive to others.
- Make eye contact.
- Use body language.
- Be inclusive.
- Use a multicultural lens.
- Be dependable.
- Tell the truth.
- Use discretion.
- Use good judgment.
- Resist social pressure.
- Avoid taking advantage.
- Avoid using violence.
- Avoid trouble.
