School Plays
Under the direction of Saint Mark’s Drama teacher Jessica Sage, Saint Mark’s students produce two plays annually, The Fall Play – a dramatic production and the Spring Musical. Students in grades four through eight may participate in the productions. Interested fourth graders are given pres-assigned or chorus roles. Fifth through eighth grade students must audition from the script for principal and supporting roles. All students who audition are guaranteed a role of some kind. Many students also prefer to work backstage.
Productions take place at Marin Civic Center’s Showcase Theatre on a full theatrical stage. Beautiful costumes and elaborate sets are lovingly designed and crafted by professionals and parent volunteers. The productions all feature high production values and equally impressive student performances.
This year’s Fall Play was Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The wonderful production included visual effects designed by parent Stephen Rosenbaum, a special effects supervisor for such films as X-Men II and The Perfect Storm. Other recent fall plays have included The Gift, an original production by Saint Mark’s students (Fall 2005) and Museum (Fall 2004), both directed by former Saint Mark’s Upper Division Drama teacher Peter Meyers, Recent spring musicals have included Bye Bye Birdie (Spring 2006) and Fiddler on the Roof (Spring 2005), both directed by Jessica Sage and produced by Maureen Kalbus, Head of Lower School.
