Board of Trustees

Saint Mark’s, like most independent schools, is governed by a Board of Trustees. The Saint Mark’s Board consists of 22 members, nominated and elected by its membership. No member represents any particular constituency, but rather the institution as a whole. Board members are elected to serve based on their commitment to the school and the expertise they bring to the Board.

Trustees actively support the school, the leadership of the school head and independent education in general. Volunteer service entails, if possible, financial support but always includes the gift of time and thought and effort. The board of an independent school is charged with the governance, not the management of the school. The Saint Mark’s Board focuses on four major areas of governance:

  1. Financial integrity of the school
  2. Employment and supervision of the Head
  3. Policy and performance of the school
  4. Organization and management of itself so as to fulfill its duties to the school

The Board’s work is primarily achieved by its committees. Our committees are made up of Board members, administrators and other community members with particular areas of expertise. They are: Advisory; Audit; Community Relations; Development; Diversity; Education; Endowment; Enrollment Management; Finance; Site and Facilities; Strategic Plan; Trustees; and additional ad hoc committees as needed.
