World Languages
Students are introduced to French, Spanish and Mandarin in lower grades and then choose one language to pursue through eighth grade.
Our dynamic, challenging K-8 French and Spanish programs and our recently introduced Mandarin program actively engage students as they learn to communicate in another language. Classes are taught primarily in the target language; developing oral language skills is emphasized.
Students also become proficient in reading and writing and gain an understanding and appreciation of world cultures.Kindergartners listen to stories about the Moon Lady in Mandarin Class during the Chinese Moon Festival in October.
Skills are developed through a variety of activities and resources - in and outside the classroom. For example, students proudly wear Superfrançais necklaces reminding them to speak only French in class.
Seventh grade students practice their Spanish every week with heritage speakers from Davidson Middle School. Kindergartners listen to stories about the Moon Lady in Mandarin Class during the Chinese Moon Festival in October. Language field trips are taken throughout the Bay Area.
Students also have the option of going on a study trip to Quebec City or Mexico in February.
