Integrated Studies: The Renaissance

In the spring of their seventh grade year students participate in a three-week Integrated Studies program which immerses them in an in-depth, hands-on study of the Renaissance.

In week one, students learn about the Renaissance as seen through the lens of each core academic discipline. In science, students may study Galileo and explore the birth of scientific investigation, while in English they may read Shakespeare. Guest speakers are brought in to teach lessons on Renaissance art and music.

Week two, the heart of the program, is an intensive session which suspends regular classes. Students work with an advisor to complete three major projects: writing and designing a research-based broadside, creating a hands-on art project and developing an oral project. Past examples have included: writing persuasive editorials about the role of patrons, painting frescos, building models of the Duomo in Florence and performing humorous skits about Renaissance science.

The program culminates in a lively Renaissance faire – attended by all Upper Division students – which features student broadsides and art projects, food, entertainment and oral project performances.
