Science
Middle Division Science covers a broad content – the physical, chemical, earth and biological sciences – to promote an understanding and appreciation of science and technology. Students develop a basic scientific literacy. They also acquire an understanding of the scientific method through an inquiring, hands-on, problem-solving approach. They learn to practice and record data and findings in a variety of ways including journaling, following set scientific procedures, writing scientific papers and creating hands-on projects. Students enjoy this process by thinking critically and creatively.
Here are two examples. In the fourth grade, students build toothpick bridges in teams. This requires them to learn about design and engineering, create a blueprint, “purchase” materials from a lumber company, assemble a bridge to match their blueprint and test the final product. In the fifth grade, students design and conduct controlled experiments using Wisconsin Fast Plants. Working in teams, students agree upon and apply a plan, plant the seeds, collect and record data and observations daily and compare their findings with other teams.
