Math

From kindergarten through third grade, students are learning to master elementary mathematics.

They learn how to read, write, and count numbers; measure linearly, volume, weight, area, time; name and explore shapes; recognize patterns; handle money; explore graphs, charts, tables, and data; interpret number stories and solve problems. Read the Saint Mark's mathematics mission statement.

Classes are lively and hands-on. Teachers relate math to everyday experiences as well as daily and seasonal activities. Everything is a potential teaching tool —the kindergartners’ visit to the pumpkin patch, the 100th day of school, temperatures, and currencies of other countries. Other tools include manipulatives and personalized math packets.

The spiral curriculum in “Everyday Mathematics” enables topics to be covered, then revised in a different way the following year to deepen understanding. Each student’s needs are continually assessed, both orally and in writing. This allows teachers to tailor work for an individual student, thereby ensuring his or her success.
