Visual Art

We strongly believe everyone is an artist, with different talents, strengths and interests. Students explore and develop their artistic skills in variety of media – pastel, pencil, watercolor, tempera paint, acrylic paint, clay, paper mache, printmaking and mixed media.

They discover art both as an artist and an art historian. They learn to appreciate different styles of art from a variety of cultures and time periods. Kindergarteners create a fantasy animal out of recycled materials by learning about Oaxacan art. Third graders learn to paint interiors by studying the work of Matisse, Cassatt and others.

Students develop technical mastery, learn to understand their own creative process and gradually become artists who can express themselves in sophisticated ways. Kindergartners through 6th graders come to art studio weekly. 7th and 8th graders take art as an elective twice weekly.

Examples of student art can be seen in our online gallery, to the right, and at our annual “Saint Mark’s Art Show”
