Strategic Plan

Curriculum and Program

Context

Saint Mark’s has, throughout its history, been known for its rigorous academic program and its nurturing community. It has achieved that reputation through a synthesis of thoughtful innovation and a clear understanding of traditional methods. In addition to its academic program, the school has woven into its culture a strong ethical component with its emphasis on the Seven Pillars of Character, the Honor Code and service learning. Athletics and the arts are also integral parts of each student’s experience.

Systematic annual evaluations by outside experts of the various parts of the curriculum have been invaluable in maintaining a strong program. A changing world, however, demands that the school carefully continue to re-think and re-evaluate its offerings. Participation in a diverse society and the responsibility of leadership in a global community ask that students be prepared to live and work in a world different from the one their teachers and parents experienced. Saint Mark’s curriculum and program should reflect that.

Goal

Continue to enhance the educational program incorporating the best relevant theories and practices of current research.

Implementation Steps

  1. Evaluate the program, particularly the curriculum and pedagogy, and make necessary changes to ensure their appropriateness in preparing students for a diverse society and a sustainable, global community.
  2. Further develop the differentiated educational program in order to serve better the spectrum of learning styles and abilities of Saint Mark’s students.
  3. Continue to actively integrate technology into the daily life of the classroom as appropriate.
  4. Ensure that the language program offerings are the ones best suited to prepare students for success in the global community.

  5. Continue to strengthen the ethical components throughout the school’s program.
