Seven Pillars of Character

Development of good character has been at the heart of Saint Mark’s goals since the school’s inception. In 1997, in response to parents’ requests, the faculty and administration formally inaugurated the Seven Pillars of Character.

Honesty, Respect, Caring, Fairness, Citizenship, Courage and Responsibility were selected as foundational values;

Honesty, Respect, Caring, Fairness, Citizenship, Courage and Responsibility were selected as foundational values; and the Seven Pillars were introduced into the life of the school, not as a separate program or curriculum, but as a beacon calling us all to abide by the highest standards of behavior. Posted on the walls of each classroom, students began to become familiar with the Seven Pillars. Teachers began to work with them, each in his or her unique way. A few years later, in celebration of Saint Mark’s 20th anniversary, the Seven Pillars were carved into a wooden plaque that was hung in the entryway to the school. A simple reminder that “character is built choice by choice” was included.

Today, the Seven Pillars of Character are integrated seamlessly into the life of Saint Mark’s. They have become part of all we do and all we are.

Golf is the sport that is most like Saint Mark’s...There is no referee. There is nobody checking your score. The only way the game is worth playing is if you are sportsman enough to play it fairly and honestly, just like life.”
